India v New Zealand - Memorable matches

India's first-ever Test win against New Zealand and it was only fitting that it came at the cradle of Indian cricket, Brabourne Stadium, Bombay (Mumbai). Vinoo Mankad made 223, Subash Gupte took eight wickets and the hosts cruised home, by an innings and 27 runs.

Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy added 413 runs for the first wicket, a record stand that stood for as many as 52 years. Subhash Gupte then took nine wickets and the first India-New Zealand Test series ended 2-0 in the hosts' favour.

India's first-ever Test on New Zealand's soil and the visitors completed an emphatic 5-wicket victory to go 1-0 up in the series.

India's first Test wIn in New Zealand since 1967-68 proved to be enough for the tourists to register their second series triumph in New Zealand. The hosts were indebted to an eighth wicket stand worth 186 runs between Jesse Ryder and Daniel Vettori, helping the home team recover from 60/6 to 2.79. India's first nine batsmen made 15 or more and Sachin Tendulkar rattled up 160 as the visitors ran a commanding 241-run first innings lead, a deficit which proved too much for the hosts.

A marathon eleven-hour-vigil from Gautam Gambhir saved the day for the visitors as they batted out 180 overs in the second innings to force a draw. India had fallen behind by 314 runs after the completion of their first innings and were forced to follow-on, only for the hosts to witness Gambhir's masterclass.
